Inside Out Learning Space

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ'S)

What can I expect from the first session?

During the initial session, we focus on getting to know your child and understanding their unique strengths and challenges. We’ll observe their behaviour, communication style, and preferences to determine a tailored approach for future sessions.

How long are the sessions?

Session lengths vary depending on the child’s age, interests, and needs. We offer flexible options, including 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, to accommodate individual preferences and attention spans.

How frequently are sessions needed?

While we typically recommend weekly sessions for optimal progress and consistency, the frequency can be adjusted based on the child’s goals and availability. We’re committed to working with families to find a schedule that suits their needs.

What role do parents play during the sessions?

Parents are encouraged to participate in the sessions as much or as little as they feel comfortable. Initially, you may choose to observe, but as the child and practitioner develop a rapport, you’ll have opportunities to engage and learn strategies to support your child’s progress at home.

What is Spelling to Communicate (S2C)?

S2C is a method that empowers individuals with motor challenges to communicate effectively using a letterboard or similar device. Individuals can express themselves independently by mastering the motor skills needed to spell words, enhancing their communication abilities.

Will using the letterboard improve my child’s speech?

While our focus is on providing alternative means of communication, such as S2C, research suggests that AAC interventions can complement speech development and may even lead to improvements. Our priority is to equip your child with a reliable mode of communication while supporting their overall language skills.

What is play-based therapy?

Play-based therapy emphasises learning through play and exploration. It allows children to engage in enjoyable and meaningful activities while also addressing developmental goals and promoting social interaction. Our approach is child-centred and encourages curiosity and creativity.

How can Inside Out Learning Space support siblings and family members?

We understand that supporting a nonspeaking child impacts the entire family. We offer resources, guidance, and sibling sessions to help siblings and family members understand and connect with their nonspeaking loved ones. Our parent coaching sessions also provide strategies for navigating challenges and fostering a supportive family environment.

Are your services covered by insurance or funding programs?

Yes, our services are typically covered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and other funding programs. We can assist you with the necessary paperwork and documentation to ensure you receive the support you need.
