Hello, I’m Shelby Watson, the heart behind Inside Out Learning & Advocacy. With a background in Primary, Early Childhood, and Inclusion teaching, my dedication to supporting nonspeaking and minimally speaking children, particularly those with Autism, traces back to my childhood.

Growing up with two autistic sisters, I developed a unique understanding of communication and regulation challenges. My passion for helping others comprehend the nuances of nonspeaking individuals ignited early, sparked by my commitment to making my sisters feel understood and valued. This passion has driven me to create Inside Out Learning, a haven for children facing communication hurdles.

In addition to being a mother of two children (ages 2 and 5), I bring a wealth of experience to the table. My roles as a kindergarten teacher, neurodiversity and inclusion advocate, babysitter, and even a gymnastics and cheerleading coach have enriched my perspective on diverse learning needs.

My commitment to inclusivity led me to pursue numerous workshops and professional development opportunities, with a specific focus on Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). Additionally, I’ve completed specialised training to become a Spelling to Communicate Practitioner, equipping me to better support those with complex communication needs. Spelling to Communicate empowers nonspeakers to overcome the barriers posed by traditional oral communication by pointing to letters on a board as an alternative means of communication enabling students to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively and accurately. 

At Inside Out Learning & Advocacy, my goal is to foster respectful relationships, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their communication abilities, feels safe and understood. I am an advocate for alternative communication methods, striving to provide reliable avenues for all individuals to be able to express themselves whenever and with whoever they want to.
