Spelling to Communicate (S2C)
Unlocking Communication with S2C
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a transformative method that empowers nonspeaking individuals to communicate effectively. Developed by Elizabeth Vosseller, SLP and Director of the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC), S2C focuses on teaching purposeful motor skills necessary for pointing to letters and spelling as an alternative method of communication. Through S2C, nonspeaking individuals worldwide have gained the ability to fully express their thoughts, feelings, and desires, debunking misconceptions about intellectual disabilities and shedding light on conditions like apraxia (also known as dyspraxia), which hinder the translation of intent into movement.
What to Expect from an S2C Lesson
Inside Out Learning operates on the principle of presuming competence, believing that all nonspeaking individuals can learn and understand given the proper support. Our S2C lessons are tailored to the individual’s needs, incorporating engaging cognitive-age-appropriate lessons facilitated by highly trained S2C practitioners. Using a motor-cognitive see-saw approach rooted in the latest neurological research, our lessons aim to develop the skills necessary for successful communication.
Is S2C Right for My Nonspeaking Child?
At Inside Out Learning, we echo Elizabeth Vosseller’s sentiment that every nonspeaking person deserves a champion. Our commitment to inclusivity means we never turn away any nonspeaker. Communication is a fundamental human right, and we believe in providing the necessary systems and support for all individuals to succeed.
Why Use a Letterboard in S2C?
Nonspeaking individuals often face challenges with purposeful motor movements, making traditional typing or speaking methods difficult to master. S2C utilises a letterboard approach involving gross motor movements, making it more accessible for individuals with apraxia. Individuals develop the necessary motor skills for communication, starting with simplified stencil boards and gradually progressing to full letterboards.
Learning Timeline and Resources
The time it takes for someone to master S2C varies based on several factors, including the severity of apraxia, engagement with lessons, and the support environment. To learn more about S2C and its potential benefits, we would like to encourage you to explore resources available through the International Association for Spelling as Communication website (I-ASC).
At Inside Out Learning, we’re dedicated to supporting nonspeaking individuals on their communication journey through the transformative power of Spelling to Communicate. Please get in touch with us today to learn how S2C can unlock your child’s communication potential.
